Modern Technology in Today's Classrooms
I always considered myself pretty up-to-date with technology along with the uses and applications of it. Yet, here I am writing my first blog and feeling pretty overwhelmed with the whole set-up process. Somewhere along the line of our modern society and its technological advances, I lost sight of it all. Which is okay, I am completely okay with the learning process and becoming more in-tune with it.
Technology has become such a force behind much of what we do as a culture, and education is no exception. There are several debates on the topic; one of them being, is it too much? Are we beginning to rely too heavily on technology? Well, to each his own, I guess. In my opinion, it is very beneficial. It is the world in which we live in now, and it is important for the future generations to be able to manage and function with such technology. Therefore, future educators such as myself should be competent and knowledgeable in technology's newest trends.
It does not matter what area in the educational field one is pursuing. Technology can be applicable to any subject matter, and ultimately to any age group or even developmental stage. For example, I am going into special education, and while some individuals may find this irrelevant to students with disabilities, the reality is that it is absolutely not. While working with students in an MRDD setting, I witnessed a child make great use of his own iPad that is kept at the school specifically for him for communication reasons. There was a certain app he was able to open and press buttons that would verbalize for him any needs or wants he had. It completely amazed me, and this is only one example!
Technology is very important, and in order to begin to learn about it ourselves, we must first come to realize just how important it is. I am very excited to get to learn all of the different ways to implement it into the special education classroom, and have fun while doing so.
